Ronny Delrue is an artist’s artist. Drawing is Delrue’s primary manner to capture an idea and create an armature for his paintings and sculptures. Through the gesture of a pencil, he grasps the unseen in the heart and mind. The act of drawing creates order and opens at the same time the door to disorder, to imagination For Delrue, drawing is akin to a voyage. If the first line is good, the voyage starts, without wanting to know precisely where it ends. The direction the works take are therefore dictated by the definition and mastering of the first line. It enables him to create another world, one of which he is only aware of once it appears.
Delrue aims to paint and draw in exactly the same way. According to Delrue: a painting must resemble a portrait, which at least disguises as much as it reveals. Therefore, when he begins with an image he recalls, Delrue aims to reshape it in paint. Through this process, the anecdote becomes an image that becomes universal. He recreates a known image into something it never has been before, but as it exists, as an idea.
His work can be found in the collections of S.M.A.K. The Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art Ghent, MuHKA Museum of Contemporary Art. Antwerp, MuZEE Museum for Modern Art Ostend, MAC’s Museum of Contemporary Art Le Grand Hornu, Mons, Musée d’Ixelles, Brussels, CED – Centre des épreuves et des dessins Liège, Musée des Beaux Arts de Charleroi, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège – La Boverie and Museum dr. Guislain Ghent among many others.
